About Us
At Zen Caregiving Project, our mission is simple: We nurture caregivers and those they care for by teaching skills rooted in mindfulness and compassion while fostering connections. Our volunteers bring presence, kindness, and companionship to people facing serious illness, aging, isolation, and the end of life.
About the Role
We're looking for a part-time Volunteer Coordinator to support our volunteer program at two San Francisco sites: Laguna Honda Hospital and The Cadillac Hotel in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Reporting to the Volunteer Program Manager, you'll recruit, train, schedule, and support a team of 10–15 volunteers who accompany residents at some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
Many of the people we serve have experienced homelessness, substance use, and long-term resource scarcity. You'll be a steady, organized presence for volunteers and a bridge to Spanish-speaking residents and families. This role suits someone who is organized and practical and who also feels at home in conversations about loss, grief, and dying. The role is hybrid, with most work done on-site at Laguna Honda Hospital and The Cadillac Hotel.
What You'll Do
● Support recruitment, screening, training, onboarding, and scheduling a team of 10–15 volunteers, keeping placements well-matched and consistently staffed
● Coordinate volunteer activities and projects from planning through evaluation, including logistics, timelines, and communication with site staff
● Provide ongoing support, check-ins, and reflective space for volunteers, especially after difficult experiences or the death of a resident
● Communicate in Spanish and English with co-workers, volunteers, residents, families, and community partners
● Engage directly with residents living at The Cadillac Hotel and in the surrounding neighborhood, offering light care navigation and a safe conversational space
● Help volunteers understand and honor the experiences and dignity of people affected by homelessness, substance use, and poverty
● Maintain volunteer records, track hours, and prepare program activity reports for the Volunteer Program Manager
● Build and nurture relationships with staff and partners at The Cadillac Hotel, Curry Senior Center and at Laguna Honda Hospital
What You Bring
Required:
● Professional proficiency in spoken and written Spanish
● Comfort and skill in discussing loss, grief, death, and dying with sensitivity and presence
● Demonstrated experience coordinating projects, programs, or teams, including
scheduling, logistics, and follow-through
● Experience working with people in underserved communities who have experienced homelessness, substance use, and resource scarcity
● A nonjudgmental, trauma-informed approach grounded in respect for each person's dignity
● Strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities across two sites
● Availability for 15–20 hours per week on weekdays
Nice to Have:
● Familiarity with Medicaid (Medi-Cal) rules, eligibility, and benefits
● Experience with care navigation, case management, or connecting people to health and social services
● Volunteer management experience in hospice, healthcare, supportive housing, or social services settings
● Interest in or experience with mindfulness or contemplative practice
● Familiarity with the Tenderloin neighborhood and its community resources
Compensation & Benefits
● $28–$33 per hour, depending on experience
● Generous paid time off (PTO) policy
● Hybrid schedule, Flexible hybrid arrangement, focused on weekdays with occasional weekend availability as needed
